Annie's Story

A Rare Disease Has Taken Kidneys From Her Brothers, Her Sons, and Her Mother. Now It's Her Turn.

Annie has watched Alport Syndrome, a rare, inherited kidney disease, move through her family like a tide. Her two brothers received kidney transplants as teenagers. Her two sons received theirs in the same summer, in 1998. Her mother received a transplant in 1997. Now Annie is facing kidney failure herself.

Her words are simple and striking. She wants to live to 96, like her father. To see her grandchildren graduate from college. To dance at their weddings. Annie would love to continue traveling, visit friends and family with her partner of 20 years, and see more of the world.

Annie has a lifelong story of helping others, and, professionally, as a counselor for the Portland Public School system, she focused on the post-graduation plans students choose after high school. She was actively involved in delivering food baskets to the homeless and in packing weekly groceries for delivery to underserved and housebound populations. She volunteered at the Oregon Food Bank and served meals to women's shelters. She combines her love of cooking with helping others experiencing food scarcity.

 Additionally, Annie's love for reading led her to contribute to literacy programs for elementary school children. She loves books and libraries and, like her parents before her, spends much time and energy helping others develop the same passion for reading she has.
